Functional Neurological Conditions Special Interest Group

Chair: Dr Jason Price, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, South Tees NHS FT

Due to a substantial reduction in funding for the Clinical Networks this year, we have been directed to focus on a reduced number of national priorities. Neurological conditions is not one of our 2016/17 priorities and as such we are unable to provide administrative or project management support to the Functional Neurological Conditions Special Interest Group.

We want to take this opportunity to commend the work of this group between the period 2013 – 2016 and we have compiled a document of their achievements which is available via the link below. The group continues to meet and contacts can be provided if required.

Neurological Conditions Legacy Document

Background

Functional neurological conditions account for around a third of all new neurology outpatient referrals. There are commonalities between functional neurological symptoms and those relating to other conditions, for which the term ‘persistent physical symptoms’ more broadly describes the issue.

Aims

  • Develop standardised information and education material for professionals in the identification and management of patients presenting with functional / persistent symptoms;
  • Develop standardised information and education material for patients diagnosed with functional conditions.
  • Understand the current service provision for patients with functional symptoms;
  • Develop a more flexible model that would deliver an improved experience and outcome for patients, based on national and local good practice examples.

This special interest group works collaboratively with the Northern Association for Persistent Physical Symptoms (NAPPS) group on shared themes.
