Epilepsy Interest Group

Chair: Dr Simon Taggart, Consultant Neurophysiologist, South Tees NHS Foundation Trust

Due to a substantial reduction in funding for the Clinical Networks this year, we have been directed to focus on a reduced number of national priorities. Neurological conditions is not one of our 2016/17 priorities and as such we are unable to provide administrative or project management support to the Epilepsy Interest Group.

We want to take this opportunity to commend the work of this group between the period 2013 – 2016 and we have compiled a document of their achievements which is available via the link below. The group continues to meet and contacts can be provided if required.

Background

Epilepsy was identified as a local and national priority for the NHS and was one of the areas the Strategic Clinical Networks were tasked with looking at. As part of this, and reflecting on similar successful approaches for other therapeutic areas, we brought together stakeholders from areas involved in epilepsy management. Regionally we are already quite advanced in many ways with the excellent annual North East Epilepsy Research Meeting. The Epilepsy Interest Group will take more of a clinical focus and it is envisaged the group will meet once or twice per year, bringing everyone together, to drive improvements and excellence in epilepsy services in our area.

The group has been divided into six sub-groups:

  • acute management
  • chronic management
  • non-epileptic attack disorder
  • research / audit
  • mental health
  • transitions
