Liver Network

Chair: Dr Mark Hudson, Consultant Hepatologist

Liver Network Legacy Document – a record of the Network’s achievements up to 2016.

Mortality from liver disease has risen dramatically in the past 10 to 15 years and is now the fifth most common cause of preventable death in the UK. In February 2009 the North East Clinical Hepatology Network was formed and relaunched as the North East and North Cumbria Liver Network in 2012. The Network brought together liver specialists to share knowledge, discuss complex clinical problems and develop guidelines to improve the care of patients with liver disease.

Priorities for 2014/15 included:

  • Improving education in primary care around the importance of liver disease screening, early diagnosis of liver disease and to establish integration into GP IT systems
  • Pathways for Abnormal Liver Function Tests (LFTs)
  • Screening for Viral Hepatitis and Equity of Access to New Treatments
  • Reducing variation in the Treatment and Management of Cirrhosis
  • Reducing the Mortality Rate in Severe Acute Alcohol Hepatitis
