Children’s Surgery Group

Chair: Mr Gareth Hosie, Paediatric Surgeon, Great North Children’s Hospital

Due to a substantial reduction in funding for the Clinical Networks this year, we have been directed to focus on a reduced number of national priorities. Child health is not one of our 2016/17 priorities and as such we are unable to provide administrative or project management support to the Children’s Surgery Group.

We want to take this opportunity to commend the work of this group between the period 2013 – 2016 and we have compiled a document of their achievements which is available via the link below. The group continues to meet and contacts can be provided if required.

Child Health Network Legacy Document

The North East and North Cumbria have a long established informal network of referral patterns for children’s specialist services. Recently, the presence of a formal managed clinical surgical network has been recommended by the Royal College of Surgeons and mandated by the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death. This network group was established in November 2012, and consists of surgeons of all specialities who have a whole or part paediatric practice, with significant input from paediatric anaesthetists and paediatricians. The group provides a link between commissioners, local trusts and specialist centres to ensure that children receive the best quality surgical care in a safe, appropriate environment, located as close to their home as possible.

  • To provide clinical advice on paediatric surgery issues to the Child Health Network Group and to the Maternity & Child Health Steering Group as and when required.
  • To incorporate the priorities identified by NHS England with the priorities identified at a local & regional level
  • To understand current referral pathways and ensure that these are appropriate and adhered to
  • To acknowledge and work towards implementation of best practice guidance and measures as produced by the Royal Colleges and other nationally endorsed bodies
  • To facilitate the sharing of expertise across the region and develop mechanisms to facilitate learning between hospital trusts
  • To continually horizon scan and anticipate changes in workforce to ensure sustainability of children’s surgical services within the network
