Macmillan Cancer Learning Disability Project Annual Report 2016/17

The North East and Cumbria Learning Disability Network hosts the Macmillan cancer learning disability project. The project has now completed its first year as a Macmillan project building on the work of the ACE programme improving cancer screening for people with learning disabilities. The Macmillan cancer learning disability project looks to improve cancer services and experiences for people with a learning disability, their families and carers. We primarily focus on breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

Improving cancer services for people with a learning disability is important because we know people with learning disabilities are less likely to:
• Take part in screening programmes
• Be informed of their cancer diagnosis and prognosis
• Be given pain relief during cancer treatment
• Be involved in decisions about their cancer care
• Receive palliative care
